Despatch from Secretary of State to High Commissioner, No. 42
of 26th August, 1898, re pension of certain Officers
of the Western Pacific High Commission.
Sir,
In reply to your despatch marked "Fiji No. 11" of January 28th, last calling attention to Sir H. Berkeley's despatch No. 42 of the 7th August, 1895, respecting the claim to pension of certain officers of the Western Pacific High Commission, I have the honour to inform you that I have been in communication with the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury on the subject.
The Lords Commissioners are unwilling to lay down any general rule, but they will be prepared carefully to consider the case of any officer on its own merits as it may arise.
I have etc.,
(sd.) J. Chamberlain.
